This is where Substack scores above all other media platforms. I come across excellent writing on a topic that perhaps I wouldn't have chosen to read, but which I should and must read, and which resonates so strongly with my family experience. Thanks for posting this and for broadening my knowledge of Germany's past.

I loved this! I'm working on a story that takes place during all of this...and yet I knew nothing about it. But! And this is a big BUT, it showed me where I had to go to end my story. Thanks for putting this up!

Excellent piece of writing exhibiting the historical dangers of group think. I immediately thought of Charlie Kirk’s Turning Point USA on our college campuses today🇺🇸

Over 10 years ago, the private notes, documents, diaries and thousands of letters of Hans and Sophie Scholl could be accessed at a Munich archive for the very first time. Before, the Scholl family did not give permission to read most of these documents. I was one of the first historians to read their letters, to see unpublished drawings and photos. - I wrote the first biography of Hans Scholl. Then later, I could publish a book with Sophie Scholl's selected letters... and her drawings of babies and toddlers. Beautiful! -- Thank you, dear Marina, for bringing their lives into the light. I will treasure these colourised images of the Scholls, their friends and companions.

Great piece of history. TY

Colors of time are cyclical across the spectrums of the history of mankind.

World is on the cusp of another epoch of the same color of time now.

Times and their correlating colors are able to be discovered and then utilized for those led to steward the mysteries of mankind.

History is repeating itself. How sad! How many idealistic voices have been silenced!

The sad truth is that the janitor who turned the Scholl's in might not have been particularly upset by what they did. He may have been trying to score some extra rations. Or he might have simply been terrified that the Gestapo would catch them anyway, and start asking, "Why didn't YOU turn them in?" That, too, is a testament to the evil of Nazism.

Dear Marina, I’m so glad to find your newsletter and applaud your telling the full story of the White Rose Society.

However, the invasion of Poland and the subsequent persecution and ghettoization of Polish Jews began in 1939, not 1937. Germany invaded Poland(and WWII began in Europe) on September 1, 1939.

Thanks! It's a sad story after all, but it's always worth reminding. They were right, if there hadn't been Germans like them, how could we still have a Germany today?

If you want to see for yourself, how much alive they are, you can search the Internet for "Geschwister Scholl" (or other search terms obviously though this one will likely give you those schools, places etc and not just historic documents).

I read the book about the White Rose and it was very good. Sophie was very inspirational and was not afraid to fight and if need be, die for her beliefs. Thank you for sharing.
