Perhaps a new counter culture initiative could begin by publishing a roster of the world's most forgettable men...it would, unfortunately, be a very long list.

Thank you Marina, for your contribution to sustaining the species, though as warped and wretched as it sometimes may be.

A couple of years ago, while I was teaching public schools in Tokyo, I came across a Quora post about the story of Czeslawa Kwoka, along with your colorized photo of her. I broke down in tears.

That colorized photo has since become the avatar of my Zuckerberg-Fakebook account, and her story has now been shared with at least 5,000 followers. Because of our collective incapacity to learn from history, Czeslawa still lives ... and dies. Over and over. Like Prometheus, the price and the pain never stops. This forever war of mankind against its own worst nature.

Abraços do Japão, e de alguém que ama a música brasileira, um de nossos poucos consolos.

My family's stories and 19th c. photographs helped shape how I viewed the world and are partly why I chose a degree in History. Through my ancestors, I could connect to so many events and eras, really making it personal. This post definitely resonates with me.

Many thanks for your most thoughtful post! Permit me to offer two quick thoughts:

<< I had just posted a colorized portrait of Hitler - with plenty of context; it wasn't completely out of the blue - and this one guy was enraged. He demanded I take it down and asked how I could be "celebrating" a figure as heinous as Adolf Hitler…This individual clearly misunderstood the nature of what I do. >>

Alas, people take umbrage very easily today. I have comparable experiences, I assure you!

<< Record your grandparents' stories, digitize old family photos (and don't ruin them with AI colorization that will turn your grandpa into a walking rainbow with an unhealthy obsession for orange and purple), record family traditions or trace your family tree. >>

Yes, that is SO important! We are blessed to have at our disposal the technological capacity to preserve so much family history. Sadly, we did not have such devices when I was young, and many of the voices and stories I should love to have recorded were long gone before I might have preserved them.

I have hanging on my home office wall your color enhanced picture of Eisenhower addressing the airborne troops on the eve of D-Day. I find myself looking at, not the General, but at the faces of the other men. I don’t recognize any of them, although I imagine some are known. Considering what they are about to do, I can only shake my head in admiration. They, like Ike himself, also made history. And, by the way, I have never had occasion to question your judgment in your choice of subject matter. Best wishes.

I always thought highly of General Douglas MacArthur forcing the media to take pictures and document the WWII concentration camps. He was correct, “the world should see this travesty”
